Turtle tagging project is helping protect leatherback migratory routes 🐢🛰️ Researchers and volunteers are fitting turtles with satellite tags on the Pearl Islands, a Panamanian archipelago in the Pacific Ocean. Part of The @leatherbackproject programme to collect data on the migratory routes taken by leatherback sea turtles and other turtle species, the hope is that the data collected will help protect marine species in the region. Bella Lack was one of the volunteers and her organisation, the youth-led Reserva Land Tryst is also a partner with The Leatherback Project to help raise awareness and funds to purchase more tags - each costing upwards of $3000. Together, they hope the research will help convince governments to create a national wildlife refuge around the islands, offering legal protection to the turtles nationally and internationally. Currently, the islands fall outside the protected Eastern Tropical Pacific Marine Corridor (CMAR). This new data could secure Pearl Islands’ inclusion in the future.
