At a dig site at Breamore in Hampshire, UK, she uncovered the skeletal remains of a young adult and a child. Further analysis uncovered Yersinia pestis DNA, a bacteria known to cause a bubonic plague epidemic that swept the Byzantine Empire in the sixth century. Until now, there was little evidence that this plague had reached Britain. Injecting such microbes underground along with captured CO2 could enable more durable storage of the greenhouse gas. The recent Schmidt Ocean Institute expedition resulted in identifying deep-sea corals, glass sponges, sea urchins, amphipods, squat lobsters, and other species likely new to science. During the expedition, scientists used an underwater robot, capable of descending to depths of 4,500 meters, to collect data from ten seamounts that will be used to advance Chile’s marine protection efforts. 📹️ via @schmidtocean Tap link in bio to learn more #newspecies #marinebiology #deepsea #schmidtocean #octopus #marinelife

Turtle tagging project is helping protect leatherback migratory routes 🐢🛰️ Researchers and volunteers are fitting turtles with satellite tags on the Pearl Islands, a Panamanian archipelago in the Pacific Ocean. Part of The @leatherbackproject programme to collect data on the migratory routes taken by leatherback sea turtles and other turtle species, the hope is that the data collected will help protect marine species in the region. Bella Lack was one of the volunteers and her organisation, the youth-led Reserva Land Tryst is also a partner with The Leatherback Project to help raise awareness and funds to purchase more tags - each costing upwards of $3000. Together, they hope the research will help convince governments to create a national wildlife refuge around the islands, offering legal protection to the turtles nationally and internationally. Currently, the islands fall outside the protected Eastern Tropical Pacific Marine Corridor (CMAR). This new data could secure Pearl Islands’ inclusion in the future. 00:59This robot dog has learned to open doors with its leg 🤖🦿 This robot dog can use a leg to open doors, press buttons and pick up rucksacks while balancing on its other three legs. Four-legged robots like Spot, the star of Boston Dynamics’ viral videos, normally require an extra arm attached to their body to open doors or pick up objects, but this can add significant weight and make it harder for the robot to squeeze through narrow spaces. Philip Arm at ETH Zurich in Switzerland and his colleagues used a machine learning model to teach an off-the-shelf robotic dog to use one of its legs to perform tasks while standing still or moving with the other three legs. 00:48The surprising ways animals react to a total solar eclipse 🐢🌞 Researchers have observed all sorts of animals during solar eclipses, from wild hippopotamuses to pet dogs. Some of the most thorough studies, though, have been performed in zoos around the world. When the moon hides the sun in a total solar eclipse, some animals seem to think that it is briefly nighttime, while others pace anxiously or even gaze up at the sky. A few animals performed completely novel behaviours – some Galapagos tortoises began mating during the eclipse, and all of them gazed up at the sky after totality had passed. Past studies of hippopotamuses have found that they, too, remained agitated even after the peak of an eclipse. 00:57The world's largest flower 🌸 Rafflesia is a parasitic plant that spends most of its life cycle within its host, a tropical vine, emerging only to bloom. Its flowers are the largest in the world, spanning up to a metre. Despite this, little is known about its life cycle, and it is almost impossible to grow. Chris Thorogood and colleagues went in search of the elusive flowering plant in the hope that what they learned, could help save this plant for the future. 00:27Precision engineering at the 5000-year-old neolithic site has helped keep much of the structure upright at Stonehenge in Wiltshire, UK. One technique involved cutting pegs on top of the upright sarson stones, and corresponding grooves into the lintels, allowing them to fit together like Lego bricks. 00:17Could a solar power station in space save our planet? ☀️🤔 This is just one example of an ambitious green megaproject, designed to have a massive impact on countering the climate crisis. Whilst some want to build a huge solar power station in space, others want to regreen vast swathes of desert or prop up melting glaciers to hold back city- threatening sea level rise. These are all risky and audacious moonshots that could rack up bills in the millions and might easily end in failure. But with the world continuing to warm, it may be worth pausing to look at the best of these schemes, weighing up their chances of success and asking whether they could help us.
