The secret to getting oil paint on a budget! 🤫 I just shared a video explaining some of the reasons why oils are more expensive than other types of paint. But I don’t want people to get disheartened to try oil paints because of the cost. It is DEFINITELY possible to use oils on a tight budget!! Here are my recommendations: 1 minimalist palette - quality over quantity: a limited colour palate can give a painting better colour harmony as well as being cost effective. 2 alternative pigments: the price of paint colours is mostly determined by the pigments. So cheaper pigments aren’t worse quality just cheaper to produce. So select colours for your limited palette that are cheaper. 3 efficient technique: some techniques like acrylic underpainting or glazing can reduce the amount of oil paint you use without reducing the technical quality of the paintings. 4 smart shopping: eg second hand paint or art supply trades. 5 student paint/hues: this may reduce the quality of the paint you use but tbh it’s much better to use lesser quality paint & make amazing art than to wait until you can afford more expensive materials. My personal recommendation is to buy fewer artist quality paints but it also depends on your style and the amount of paint you get through! Finally the more you can get to know the ingredients in your painting by reading the label the more u can actually know what your buying & make money saving decisions. What are your tips? #oilpaint #oilpaintingtips #buyingoilpaint #paintingonabudget #artistadvice

What art’s inspired you so far this year? #internationalartday Happy World Art Day (April 15) from me & my clingy studio friend who landed in my wet painting. Specifically in the hair that I’d just been working on in my latest in-progress blurry painting which made me nervous as I’m painting on copper & I worried it would track the paint onto the copper background … turns out it wasn’t so easy to take off the painting as I’d like haha. I get so manny ladybirds this time of year cuz the studio backs onto a bunch of forest. And YES it crawled up my sleeve at one point. 😂😂😅 #worldartday #UnexpectedstudioGuest #BugInMyPainting #artstudio #CanadianArtist #OilPaintingfail #FemaleArtistCanada #Artisticfail #CanadianArtCollectors #OilPaintingLaughs #ArtistLifeCanada #ruralstudio

Low-cost palette in caption! 👇🎨 One of biggest factors that puts people off oil paints is that they’re the most expensive type of paint. But why are they so expensive? In high-quality oils the ingredients are actually very simple - just pigment and oil. Because the pigment load is really high (as much as 75%) you essentially pay for the pigment. Artist quality paints are divided into series (usually 1-5) depending on the cost to get & process the unique pigment/s required to make that paint colour. Each pigment is ground & processed in different ways & has its own pigment to oil ratio, so there’s no one formula. To get it right there’s a long history of science and testing that newer paints like acrylic don’t have so there’s lots of evidence to show how they will last over a long time. In my next video I’ll talk about the ways to get high quality oils on a budget. But the good news is a little oil paint can go a long way & you can design your palette based on the pigments that cost less. Earth colours are cheapest but below are some high-key colours that aren’t as pricy. ⭐️ Here’s my low-cost < high-chroma palette (in the video): Cool yellow: Hansa yellow light (PY3) Warm yellow: Hansa yellow medium (PY 74) Warm red: Napthol scarlet (PR188) Cool red: Quinacradone Magenta (PR122) Warm blue: Ultramarine blue (PB 29) Cool blue: Phthalo blue (PB 15:2) Green: Phthalo emerald (PG 36) + White & Brown #oilpaintingtips #oilpaint #oilpainttutorial #oilpaintprice #buyingoilpaints #paintingonabudget #oilpainter

TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE!! 🌙 #lincolnontario My brother convinced me to go to Niagara on the Lake to see the total solar eclipse today & I’m so glad he did!!! I’ve only seen a solar eclipse once before as a kid when I still lived in England, but it was cloudy. We were so sure it would be the same today but we monitored the weather radar & made a last minute change to a gorgeous beach in Lincoln Ontario & managed to catch the full eclipse standing on a beach between the river & Lake Ontario, with the Toronto, Mississauga, Etobicoke, & Scarborough skylines behind. I got so cold my face & hands went numb & I basically just huddled for warmth to watch the second half. #eclipse #solareclipse #niagara #niagaraonthelake #lincolnontario #charlesdaleypark #solareclipse2024

Comment your fave websites for artists! 🧑🎨 No gate-keeping! Here are my top FREE, online resources for artists looking for practical info, tips, & advice: ⭐️ WetCanvas: a site where artists can connect/learn from each other through forums. It’s one of my faves as it offers a range of perspectives & answers very niche questions…If an artist has thought it it’s probably been discussed. Just remember it’s opinion from artists who range in experience/knowledge. ⭐️ Artists Network & EmptyEasel: both websites feature loads of articles & tutorials covering all mediums, techniques, & career advice for all levels. ⭐️ Art Business Info. for Artists: it’s like your artist friend made a detailed list of every aspect of their career from copyright, shipping artwork, avoiding scams & everything else. It even includes links to other resources though a few no longer work. I get the feeling it’s a little old as it doesn’t include a lot on sm, AI, etc. ⭐️ YouTube & Social Media: many artists (🙋♀️ like me @dorisroseart) give away tips & advice through their channels as it helps connect with collectors & share their process. Remember there are free ways to support the artist back by sharing, commenting & saving their posts! 💙 Share or tag your fave YouTube Channels or social media creators in the comments! ⭐️ Art Supply Store/Brand Websites: one of the first ways I dug into the science of oil paint was through the Winsor & Newton website. I’ve since noticed most stores/brands selling art materials have hidden blogs or articles - usually on topics relating to the materials they sell. Some of the best sites are Jackson’s Art, Natural Pigments & Gamblin. BTW if you enjoy my tips & advice & want to help support me to keep making it for free please Buy Me a Coffee via my link in bio!! Every little bit helps 🙏 #artbusinessadvice #artisttips #oilpaintingtips #artistsoftiktok #paintingart #photorealism #dorisroseart #myart #artisthelp #artistresources #arttutorial #artresources #artwebsites
