These three videos are:The secret to getting oil paint on a budget! 🤫 I just shared a video explaining some of the reasons why oils are more expensive than other types of paint. But I don’t want people to get disheartened to try oil paints because of the cost. It is DEFINITELY possible to use oils on a tight budget!! Here are my recommendations: 1 minimalist palette - quality over quantity: a limited colour palate can give a painting better colour harmony as well as being cost effective. 2 alternative pigments: the price of paint colours is mostly determined by the pigments. So cheaper pigments aren’t worse quality just cheaper to produce. So select colours for your limited palette that are cheaper. 3 efficient technique: some techniques like acrylic underpainting or glazing can reduce the amount of oil paint you use without reducing the technical quality of the paintings. 4 smart shopping: eg second hand paint or art supply trades. 5 student paint/hues: this may reduce the quality of the paint you use but tbh it’s much better to use lesser quality paint & make amazing art than to wait until you can afford more expensive materials. My personal recommendation is to buy fewer artist quality paints but it also depends on your style and the amount of paint you get through! Finally the more you can get to know the ingredients in your painting by reading the label the more u can actually know what your buying & make money saving decisions. What are your tips? #oilpaint #oilpaintingtips #buyingoilpaint #paintingonabudget #artistadvice ; What art’s inspired you so far this year? #internationalartday Happy World Art Day (April 15) from me & my clingy studio friend who landed in my wet painting. Specifically in the hair that I’d just been working on in my latest in-progress blurry painting which made me nervous as I’m painting on copper & I worried it would track the paint onto the copper background … turns out it wasn’t so easy to take off the painting as I’d like haha. And YES it crawled up my sleeve at one point. 😂😂😅 #worldartday #UnexpectedstudioGuest #BugInMyPainting #artstudio #CanadianArtist #OilPaintingfail #FemaleArtistCanada #Artisticfail #CanadianArtCollectors #OilPaintingLaughs #ArtistLifeCanada #ruralstudio

00:20Low-cost palette in caption! 👇🎨 One of biggest factors that puts people off oil paints is that they’re the most expensive type of paint. But why are they so expensive? In high-quality oils the ingredients are actually very simple - just pigment and oil. Because the pigment load is really high (as much as 75%) you essentially pay for the pigment. Artist quality paints are divided into series (usually 1-5) depending on the cost to get & process the unique pigment/s required to make that paint colour. Each pigment is ground & processed in different ways & has its own pigment to oil ratio, so there’s no one formula. To get it right there’s a long history of science and testing that newer paints like acrylic don’t have so there’s lots of evidence to show how they will last over a long time. In my next video I’ll talk about the ways to get high quality oils on a budget. But the good news is a little oil paint can go a long way & you can design your palette based on the pigments that cost less. Earth colours are cheapest but below are some high-key colours that aren’t as pricy. ⭐️ Here’s my low-cost < high-chroma palette (in the video): Cool yellow: Hansa yellow light (PY3) Warm yellow: Hansa yellow medium (PY 74) Warm red: Napthol scarlet (PR188) Cool red: Quinacradone Magenta (PR122) Warm blue: Ultramarine blue (PB 29) Cool blue: Phthalo blue (PB 15:2) Green: Phthalo emerald (PG 36) + White & Brown #oilpaintingtips #oilpaint #oilpainttutorial #oilpaintprice #buyingoilpaints #paintingonabudget #oilpainter
00:31TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE!! 🌙 #lincolnontario My brother convinced me to go to Niagara on the Lake to see the total solar eclipse today & I’m so glad he did!!! I’ve only seen a solar eclipse once before as a kid when I still lived in England, but it was cloudy. We were so sure it would be the same today but we monitored the weather radar & made a last minute change to a gorgeous beach in Lincoln Ontario & managed to catch the full eclipse standing on a beach between the river & Lake Ontario, with the Toronto, Mississauga, Etobicoke, & Scarborough skylines behind. I got so cold my face & hands went numb & I basically just huddled for warmth to watch the second half. #eclipse #solareclipse #niagara #niagaraonthelake #lincolnontario #charlesdaleypark #solareclipse2024
00:46Comment your fave websites for artists! 🧑🎨 No gate-keeping! Here are my top FREE, online resources for artists looking for practical info, tips, & advice: ⭐️ WetCanvas: a site where artists can connect/learn from each other through forums. It’s one of my faves as it offers a range of perspectives & answers very niche questions…If an artist has thought it it’s probably been discussed. Just remember it’s opinion from artists who range in experience/knowledge. ⭐️ Artists Network & EmptyEasel: both websites feature loads of articles & tutorials covering all mediums, techniques, & career advice for all levels. ⭐️ Art Business Info. for Artists: it’s like your artist friend made a detailed list of every aspect of their career from copyright, shipping artwork, avoiding scams & everything else. It even includes links to other resources though a few no longer work. I get the feeling it’s a little old as it doesn’t include a lot on sm, AI, etc. ⭐️ YouTube & Social Media: many artists (🙋♀️ like me @dorisroseart) give away tips & advice through their channels as it helps connect with collectors & share their process. Remember there are free ways to support the artist back by sharing, commenting & saving their posts! 💙 Share or tag your fave YouTube Channels or social media creators in the comments! ⭐️ Art Supply Store/Brand Websites: one of the first ways I dug into the science of oil paint was through the Winsor & Newton website. I’ve since noticed most stores/brands selling art materials have hidden blogs or articles - usually on topics relating to the materials they sell. Some of the best sites are Jackson’s Art, Natural Pigments & Gamblin. BTW if you enjoy my tips & advice & want to help support me to keep making it for free please Buy Me a Coffee via my link in bio!! Every little bit helps 🙏 #artbusinessadvice #artisttips #oilpaintingtips #artistsoftiktok #paintingart #photorealism #dorisroseart #myart #artisthelp #artistresources #arttutorial #artresources #artwebsites
00:40Info in caption for what’s going on lol👇 See my previous videos for tutorials on how to do what’s shown in the video! This is how I clean out my brush cleaning tank in which I use Gamsol to wash my oil paint brushes at the end of the day (before soap & water). A few times a year it needs a good clean out as sludge builds up below the coils. That sludge goes into a separate jar with which I make new paint. So technically I don’t waste any paint sludge or solvent from my jar. (Again see old videos for more!) 👍 I guess it’s copyright week as I’m still responding to questions from my previous video but so many artists aren’t taught the difference between copyright & ownership. In most countries Once you make an original work of art you own the copyright. So a collector can buy that work from you but they can’t start selling it on tshirts or using it on a website to promote their company and you are fully able to use the image to sell prints or license the image to a brand. Of course there are reasons you might not do this, and you can come to an agreement with the buyer. But that’s courtesy not a legal obligation. #copyrightvsownership #artistcopyright #artbusinessadvice #artistreferences #artistlegalhelp #CopyrightLaw #ArtisticReferences #FairUse #IntellectualProperty #RespectTheArtist #CreativeInspiration #LegalArt #ReferenceEtiquette #CreativeProcess #CopyrightAwareness #ArtistsRights #RespectCopyright #arttips #artinstruction
01:03Any other ADHDers forget to backup? Spoiler Alert! It’s almost April Fools’ Day! Caption for more 👇 As I shared last year, April Fools Fay is my annual reminder to ‘not to be a fool’ & make sure my digital life is organized. As an artist & ADHD’er I’ve made mistakes in the past that led to loosing important data. So I like the yearly reminder to change passwords, delete unused accounts/subscriptions, & do extra backups. Digital storage devices aren’t actually meant to last that long. I sometimes wonder if we’ll end up loosing more data from our time than paper-based generations before us. It’s important not to have everything backed up to just one storage device. Or have all drives stored in the same place. I use blue-ray M-disks (from Amazon or Staples) to store important artwork images as they’re the most archival digital storage. But you will need a blu ray burner. But this year I thought I’d add a few ways to protect my art from AI into the April Fools Day line up. Artists, I’d love to know what you think about Glaze & Nightshade which are tools to protect your images from being scraped by AI art models without permission. Or have you ever used haveibeentrained.com a website that tells you if your images have been mined to train AI in breach of copyright. It seems we’re entering a whole new digital space to be wary of! 🙃 #aprilfoolsday #digitalart #artisttips #aiart #glaze #nightshade #artistrights
00:39Replying to @monmon Good question! If you use someone else’s image as a reference your art is considered derivative work. I only ever use my own references (other than practice studies/sketches). But even so I may use a model release form - It’s not strictly necessary for art but it provides clarity. I’ve also used my client’s images for commissions with permission. But not every artist has access to the subjects they want to paint. So, here’re some guidelines for selling art made using other people’s references: Just note I’m based in Canada & this is just my understanding. ✍️ The simplest thing is to obtain permission from the photographer or copyright owner. ✍️ Use images that the creator has placed in the public domain with a Creative Commons liscence on sites like Wikimedia Commons or images where the copyright has expired. ✍️ Understand fair dealing 🇨🇦 (or fair use 🇺🇸) which allows limited use of copyrighted material without permission if you can prove the artwork is transformative, satirical, you’re not using it to make money, or it’s for education reasons to improve your skills etc. But it’s complex/subjective so it’s best to get legal advice eg. the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO). Most characters like Disney are copyrighted & trademarked so can’t be legally used in your art without a licensing agreement unless it qualifies as fair dealing. ✍️Give credit to the original creator of the image & acknowledge their contribution to your artwork. #artistcopyright #artbusinessadvice #artistreferences #artistlegalhelp #CopyrightLaw #ArtisticReferences #FairUse #IntellectualProperty #RespectTheArtist #CreativeInspiration #LegalArt #ReferenceEtiquette #CreativeProcess #CopyrightAwareness #ArtistsRights #RespectCopyright #arttips #artinstruction
01:37What are your art book recommendations? Here are some of my books that I’ve found useful or inspirational as an artist for everything from business, colour, materials, or tutorials. You can find links to most of them in my 🔗 in bio under ‘recomended art supplies’ then ‘books’. 📖 "Ways of Seeing" by John Berger 📖 "Interaction of Color" by Josef Albers 📖 "Art, Inc.: The Essential Guide for Building Your Career as an Artist” by Lisa Congdon 📖 "The Secret Lives of Color" by Kassia St. Clair 📖 "The Graphic Artists Guild Handbook: Pricing & Ethical Guidelines," by The Graphic Artists Guild 📖 "The Oil Painting Book: Materials and Techniques for Today's Artist" by Bill Creevy 📖 "Portrait Painting Atelier: Old Master Techniques and Contemporary Applications" by Suzanne Brooker 📖 "Art/Work: Everything You Need to Know (and Do) As You Pursue Your Art Career" by Heather Darcy Bhandari and Jonathan Melber. 📖 "The Painter's Handbook: Revised and Expanded" by Mark David Gottsegen 📖 "Classical Drawing Atelier: A Contemporary Guide to Traditional Studio Practice" by Juliette Aristides 📖 "Collecting Art for Love, Money and More" by Ethan Wagner and Thea Westreich Wagner #artistsupport #artistbooks #paintingtips #artcareeradvice #artbooks #booksforpainters
Did I miss anything? What are your art needs/wants? Here’s what you NEED for oil painting: 1 oil paint - you need at least a 3 primary colours + white (eg. Phthalo blue, Quinacradone Magenta, Hansa yellow) 2 a surface like primed (gessoed) paper, wood or cotton canvas 3 a few brushes from about sizes 2-10, & a varnishing brush 4 wax paper or a glass cutting board for a palette 5 medium sized palette knife for mixing, applying, & cleaning paint 6 easel 7 paper towels/rags & a place to lay or hang them flat while they dry as oily rags can spontaneously combust if you ball them up 8 varnish Here’s what you WANT for oil painting (in an ideal world): 1 extra paint colours - at least an 8 colour split-primary palette + a white & brown 2 expensive surfaces like linen canvas, aluminum or copper panels. 3 a collection of brushes in multiple shapes, sizes & textures 4 a professional grey glass, vertical, or wood palette 5 a range of palette knives + a razor for cleaning the palette 6 PPE for working with toxic materials or particles in the air - like a mask. & gloves 7 an oil safety can 8 studio extras like sealable jars/empty tubes, lights, extra lights to illuminating your workspace, a mahl stick to lean your wrist on & technology stands to record your progress & hold your reference ADDITIVES (solvent & medium) Technically you can paint with neither, either, or both so it’s a little more complicated when it comes to need vs. want. You can paint solvent free (or use water soluble oils) as you can wash your brush in oil medium & mild soap but it can be a bit more time consuming. Also you can paint without oil medium, however, this makes the paint very stiff & that could be challenging. I use a small container of oil medium on my palette to thin paint & was brushes while I paint as well as solvent in a brush cleaning tank then a mild soap to clean brushes & my palette at the end of the day. Thanks Muse Kits for sending me your Pigment box to try! I thought I’d do an unboxing for those curious to see what’s inside as well as talk about what you need to start oil painting vs the extras that aren’t strictly necessary but we all want!! #BeginnerOilPainter #OilPaintingEssentials #ArtSupplies #ArtMaterials #artisttips #oilpaintingmaterials #ArtistLife #OilPainting101 #DreamMaterials #ArtisticGoals #AspiringArtist #ArtisticInspiration #OilPaintingWants
