I left home at age fifteen to go to a boarding school in Nairobi, Kenya. The deal was that four academically sound Ghanaian boys from poor backgrounds would be given a scholarship to study there. We were supposed to go home every Christmas but Ghanaian politics at the time meant we only went home once, after the first year. We spent the rest of the school holidays doing voluntary work. I was a clerk at a hospital accounts department most years. I guess I wanted to be around girls. It was a boys boarding school after all. I finished sixth form, went back to Ghana briefly and then came to the UK to train as a nurse. All that meant that I never really got to relate to my mother as an adult. Gutting! All I know is that I left home with a promise in my head. I was going to go back to do mum proud. I never got the chance but like I said in the video, things happen for a reason. I was always by my mother’s side, a mummy’s boy. She was my best friend. My counsellor says writing stuff like this is cathartic. I believe her. But, I also genuinely want as many people as possible to know of her existence. Mum was a very good person. She once said to me: “If you’re hungry and you find some food, don’t eat with both hands.” Mama, what does that mean?” “It means nothing! There is enough food plus the food isn’t going anywhere so stop scoffing it down like a pig.” We both chuckled. Mum had a wicked sense of humour. RIP Mum. Lots of people know who you are now. You don’t have to walk with your head down anymore, whenever you are. 💙💙
