Follow @homebodyhq for more basic DIY tips for your home 🏡❤️ Prep the wood 👀 A smooth surface means the stain can more easily (and evenly) penetrate the wood grain. Sanding off rough spots is key, but also make sure to completely remove dust after you’re done sanding. Pre-stain will also open the wood’s pores allowing stain to more easily (and again evenly) soak in. Shake or stir the stain 🌪️ Just like paint, parts of the stain can settle on the bottom. For the most even tone, make sure everything is completely mixed. Apply with a brush 🖌️ Using a foam or synthetic bristle brush will give you more control when applying stain coats. You can apply thin layers and get into any crevices in the wood. Let it sit 🪑 The depth of color is totally personal preference. For a really dark, fully saturated color, allow the stain time to soak into the wood, but not so much time that it completely dries. Brushing them immediately wiping off will give you a lighter, more transparent finish. Take your pick! Protect the wood 🥽 Because wood is so porous and you’ve just take steps to ensure it’s as susceptible to absorption as possible, you now need to close up those pores and seal everything. This protects the wood from discoloration or moisture, which can lead to pretty gross stuff. Try a polycrylic or polyurethane to finish your stained wood projects.
