More than 100 ballistic missiles were fired, senior U.S. officials said, complemented by about 30 cruise missiles and more than 150 explosive drones. Israeli and U.S. officials said that 99 percent of the incoming munitions were intercepted, suggesting just a few may have struck their intended targets. World leaders condemned Iran’s barrage and called for restraint.; World Central Kitchen said Tuesday that it was immediately halting its operations in Gaza after seven of its workers were killed in an Israeli strike, threatening already precarious deliveries to the besieged enclave. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that Israel carried out the strike but said it was “unintentional” and that Israel would investigate. The attack on the aid convoy killed three British nationals, U.S.-Canadian dual national, one Palestinian worker and citizens of Australia and Poland, according to the group, which has been prominently involved in Gaza relief efforts.; O.J. Two years after Congress wiped more than $100 billion in obligations off the U.S. Postal Service’s books, the mail service and its allies are pressing for help again, warning that the agency could face a financial crisis that affects home delivery without billions more.
00:28The Supreme Court appeared deeply divided Tuesday over whether prosecutors improperly stretched federal law to charge hundreds of participants in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol, a decision that will impact those rioters and, potentially, Donald Trump’s election interference trial in D.C. The court’s ruling has the potential to unwind their convictions and sentences, most of which were well under 20 years, and upend the charges still pending for other defendants. Three Jan. 6 defendants have had their sentences reduced ahead of a decision by the Supreme Court. The court’s decision, expected by late June or early July, could also further delay Trump’s already stalled trial for allegedly trying to remain in power after his 2020 defeat. Two of the four charges he faces are based on the obstruction statute, and he could move to have those charges dismissed if the Supreme Court rules for the rioters.
00:51NASA has announced a plan to bring pieces of Mars back to Earth. The mission is an ambitious attempt to secure pristine chunks of the Red Planet that might help scientists reveal whether it ever hosted life. But the future of the project has been uncertain since last fall, when an independent review board produced a dire report saying the mission needed a management overhaul amid probable cost overruns and delays. A 2020 report from the board had estimated sample return would cost $3.8 billion to $4.4 billion. Now the estimated cost over the lifetime of the mission is between $8.4 billion and $10.9 billion, with samples arriving on Earth in 2040
01:08No jurors have been selected yet in former president Donald Trump’s hush money trial in New York. On Monday, nearly 100 potential jurors were brought into the courtroom. Half were promptly excused after saying they could not be impartial. The questioning process began for 10 of the people remaining in the jury pool and will continue Tuesday.

00:29President Biden has a new plan for student relief. The proposed forgiveness plan is an alternative to the sweeping $400 billion debt relief program that Biden announced in 2022 and the Supreme Court blocked last summer. Since that court defeat, the Biden administration has worked through a negotiated rulemaking process to craft a regulation that achieves large-scale debt cancellation, albeit with a much more targeted approach than the last plan. The Education Department will release a draft rule on the forgiveness plan to solicit public comment in the coming months. But the Biden administration is releasing more details of how the proposal will accomplish the president’s goal of sweeping debt reduction.
01:49Consumer Reports found concerning levels of lead when it tested store-bought Lunchables. Elevated lead levels have been linked for decades to developmental problems in children. Concerns about weak government oversight of heavy metals in children’s food are growing after more than 500 cases of lead poisoning were linked to applesauce pouch products. Brian Ronholm, director of food policy at Consumer Reports, also noted that high sodium levels such as those found in Lunchables have the potential to increase children’s risk of developing high blood pressure. Consumer Reports found phthalates — chemicals used in plastics — in the packaging of some of the Kraft Heinz store-bought items they tested. Phthalates are linked to health concerns involving hormone disruption.
00:36Arizona’s conservative Supreme Court on Tuesday revived a near-total ban on abortion, invoking an 1864 law that forbids the procedure except to save a mother’s life and punishes providers with prison time. The 4-2 decision supersedes the previous rule, which guarded the right to end a pregnancy by the 15-week mark, resetting policy to the pre-Roe v. Wade era and adding Arizona to the roster of 16 other states where abortion is virtually outlawed. The ruling cannot be enforced for 14 days, the judges wrote, during which Planned Parenthood Arizona, as a party to the court case, could raise constitutionality questions before a lower court. And because of a separate ruling in a parallel case that sets a second clock ticking, the organization expects to provide abortion services through May, officials said during a Tuesday briefing.
