Well, consider this video a birthday greeting! In this video, Jared letterpress printed birthday greeting cards using a 3x5 Kelsey Excelsior tabletop printing press. The ink is an orange oil base ink and the type font is 36 point Cheltenham Bold Condensed. The text reads “Another Birthday?” The electrotype, from the Lewis Winter Collection, used was made about 125-130 years ago. The image depicts Father Time and the text on the cut reads “Time Flies.” The back of the card includes an image of a Washington hand press and the words “Printed at the Sacramento History Museum.” This card and other cards are available in our Museum Store! #SacHistoryMuseum #happybirthday #birthday #greetingcard #orange #typography #sacramento #museum #history #letterpress #printingpress #asmr #printing ; If you have been following along with our videos from the print shop, you’ll notice we mainly print with copy paper or card stock. This press run is a little different as Jared letterpress printed the Sacramento History Museum logo on brown paper bags using a 3x5 Kelsey Excelsior tabletop printing press. About 80 bags were printed on this press run using reflex blue rubber base ink. A dab of ink was added to the ink disk after every 8-10 prints. When it comes to letterpress printing, you have other print options than just a piece of paper. When it comes to printing something like paper bags, it can actually be pretty difficult due to layers. Having a good impression requires making sure the make ready can accommodate the different thicknesses of the bag. These paper bags are for our museum store. When you purchase something from our store, even the bag is a souvenir! #SacHistoryMuseum #paperbag #paperbags #art #SacHistoryMuseum #sacramento #museum #history #letterpress #printingpress #asmr #printing

One game stands in our way from the playoffs! The @NBA play-in tournament is underway and we here at the Sacramento History Museum are, of course, rooting for the home team! In honor of the big game tonight against the @New Orleans Pelicans, Howard letterpress printed some support for the @Sacramento Kings. We had to get out the largest wood type (30 line pica that was made over 125 years ago) in the print shop for this video. The print reads, GO KINGS.” This was printed with black rubber base ink using our Washington hand press, made in 1852. #SacHistoryMuseum #nba #basketball #typography #nbaseason #sacramentokings #museum #history #sacramento #asmr #printingpress #letterpress #printing
01:02April 17th is National Banana Day! This day is dedicated to the yellow (when ripe) fruit. While we don’t have a cut in our print shop exhibit specifically about bananas, we do have one that contains them! For today, Howard letterpress printed an electrotype (copy of a woodcut) from the Lewis Winter Collection that was made about 125-130 years ago. This cut, which is in the shape of a circle, contains a woman (maybe Minerva) surrounded by tropical fruit. Considering Lewis Winter submitted in the early 1890s many engravings for competition at the California State Fair, which was operated by the California State Agricultural Society, that could explain why he made this cut. This was printed with black rubber base ink using our Washington hand press. #SacHistoryMuseum #NationalBananaDay #banana #sacramento #museum #history #letterpress #printingpress #printing
00:59April 16th is National Healthcare Decisions Day! This day encourages individuals to think about the type of insurance they have and for employers to assess the kind of insurance they provide to their employees. It’s also fitting that it is the day after Tax Day. For today, Jared letterpress printed a large photo engraving from the Brett from Pennsylvania Collection. This would have appeared in union related publications in the 1960s and depicts a person in bed visibly ill. The words “rising medical costs” are next to his thermometer and the bed frame reads “INADEQUATE CARE.” Outside the window is an ambulance with the words “National Health Program” on the hood. This includes the union bug for AFL-CIO, and which means unions could potentially help fix this problem. This was printed with black rubber base ink using our Washington hand press. #SacHistoryMuseum #NationalHealthcareDecisionsDay #healthcare #sacramento #museum #history #letterpress #printingpress #printing

00:15April 15th is World Art Day! Go out and appreciate or make some art today! With this said, are the things we letterpress print for some of our videos considered art? For today, Alex letterpress printed an electrotype, made about 125-130 years ago, from the Lewis Winter Collection. The print depicts a young individual painting some artwork. The text below the image is 30 point Caslon font and reads, “Happy World Art Day!”This was printed with black rubber base ink using our Washington hand press. Lewis Winter was a woodcut artist and engraver, who had his business at 627 J Street from 1888 to 1910. After closing his business, he would go on to teach art at Sacramento High School until 1925. Lewis Winter passed away in January 1930. The Lewis Winter Collection was donated to the Center for Sacramento History in 2000 by Bill Gaylord, a former museum docent at the Sacramento History Museum. Within the collection are boxes of woodcuts, electrotypes, and halftones made 110 to 135 years ago that we print for some of our videos. #SacHistoryMuseum #WorldArtDay #art #artwork #sacramento #museum #history #letterpress #printing
00:53We have reached a new social media milestone on one of our platforms and all of us at the Sacramento History Museum continue to be in disbelief of our viewership. We would have never thought that our institution, a small nonprofit museum in Sacramento, California, could reach this many followers from around the world, but we are incredibly thankful for all of those who take the time to watch our videos and for your support. In this video, Jared letterpress printed a headline announcing “Sacramento History Museum Gains 1,000,000 Face📚 Followers” while using our Washington hand press, which was manufactured in 1852! The wood type for the headline is 6 line Gothic font. #SacHistoryMuseum #typography #sacramento #museum #history #letterpress #printingpress #printing
00:56April 14th is National Gardening Day! Spring garden flowers are blooming and it is time to start getting your produce garden in order for a summer harvest. For today, Howard letterpress printed an image from the largest electrotype in the Lewis Winter Collection. This cut was made at least 125 years ago. Lewis’ father, John Winter, came to California in 1855 during the Gold Rush. After briefly gold mining in Amador County, he took up farming in Antelope, just outside of Sacramento. In 1863, John married Mary A. Schaffer and they moved to a farm in Capay Valley in Yolo County where they raised 10 children. Lewis Winter would later create this cut at his wood and photo engraving office at 627 J Street in Sacramento sometime between 1888 (when he bought the business) and 1901 when his mother passed away (the cut alludes to the residence of Mrs. John Winter). The Lewis Winter Collection is full of agricultural and garden related cuts but nothing is as detailed as this engraving of his family’s farm. This was printed with black rubber base ink using our Washington hand press, which was made in 1852. #SacHistoryMuseum #NationalGardeningDay #garden #gardening #sacramento #museum #history #letterpress #printingpress #asmr #printing
01:00On April 13, 1860, the first westward bound mail from the Overland Pony Express Company arrived at the B.F. Hastings building at the corner of Second and J Streets in Sacramento, the western terminus of the Overland Pony Express Company, before being transported by steamboat to San Francisco. The mail took 10 days to travel the approximately 1,800-mile journey. The Pony Express set a new standard for quick mail delivery and connected isolated California in the west with the news of the eastern United States. Prior to the Pony Express, news or letters from the east could take weeks, if not well over a month to arrive in California either by stagecoach or steamship. Pony Express riders were paid approximately $25 per week and carried up to 20 pounds of mail in leather mochilas. Every 75 to 100 miles a new rider took over and horses were switched out every 10 to 15 miles. On October 24, 1861, the first transcontinental telegraph message was transmitted to the Pioneer Telegraph Building in Sacramento. The Pony Express stopped operations two days later. In this video, Jared letterpress printed an image of a Pony Express rider on an uncooperative horse. This cut was made in the 1930s and it is from the Bill Gaylord Collection The word “WHOA” is to the right. The text below reads “The Pony Express” and it was typeset in 24 point Stymie Black font. This was printed with black rubber base ink using our Washington hand press, which was made in 1852. #SacHistoryMuseum #onthisday #ponyexpress #art #typography #sacramento #museum #history #letterpress #printingpress #printing
01:12On April 12, 1961, aboard the Vostok 1, Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first human in space when he orbited the Earth. This was a pivotal moment during the Space Race between the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold War. Gagarin's flight led U.S. president John F. Kennedy to raise the stakes in May 1961, by asking Congress to commit to the goal of landing a man on the moon by the end of the decade. For today, Jared letterpress printed an image of a spaceship from a photo engraving that was originally made for a flyer our print shop printed for a previous exhibit our museum had in conjunction with the former Science Center. The type below reads, “THE SPACE RACE” and was set in 24 point Stymie Open font. #SacHistoryMuseum #onthisday #spaceship #space #art #typography #sacramento #museum #history #letterpress #printingpress #printing
00:50April 11th is National Pet Day! It is a day to honor the animal companions we have at home. For today, Howard letterpress printed an image from an electrotype (copy of a halftone), made about 125-130 years ago, of a dog. This cut is from the Lewis Winter Collection. This was printed with black rubber base ink using our Washington hand press, which was made in 1852. #SacHistoryMuseum #NationalPetDay #pet #pets #dog #dogs #art #sacramento #museum #history #letterpress #printingpress #asmr #printing
