00:37D U N N O T T A R C A S T L E 🏴 Is there a more dramatic, romantic castle in Scotland than Dunnottar? Standing upon a striking headland, surrounded by almost sheer cliffs on three sides, Dunnottar is not only one of the most beautiful medieval fortresses in Britain, but the site of some of the most fascinating and dramatic events in British history. Over the turbulent centuries, it has been burned, rebuilt, and burned again. It has been besieged, visited by saints and queens, and been the setting for dramatic escapes. It has been a religious community, a fortress, a terrible prison, and the scene of one of the most famous episodes in the story of Scotland. There may have been prehistoric settlements at Dunnottar, but the earliest historic record comes from the 5th century when the tireless Celtic saint Ninian established a church on the Rock of Dunnottar, one of the earliest Christian sites in Pictland. The early Christian centre at Dunnottar grew and became incorporated into a Pictish fort and small settlement. In the late 9th century King Donald II defended the fort unsuccessfully against a Viking invasion, and the king was killed. The Viking invasion was only the first episode of violence to descend upon Dunnottar. When Edward I made his bid for the Scottish throne Dunnottar once more became a pawn in the game of kings. English troops occupied Dunnottar, but a Scottish force under William Wallace captured the castle. The English took refuge in the church, but Wallace burned the church with the soldiers inside and destroyed the castle. Several windows of the 13th-century church burned by Wallace still survive in the current chapel ruins. #scotland #scotlandthebrave #foryou #braveheart #outlander
01:00I S L E O F S E I L 🏴 The Isle of Seil has been connected to the mainland by the picturesque Clachan Bridge since 1792; it is also known as the ‘Bridge over the Atlantic’. The Tigh an Truish Hotel is the first to greet you on the other side of the bridge. The name translates as ‘house of the trousers’, as this is where rebellious Highlanders would change into their trousers before going to the mainland; wearing “the Highland Dress” was made illegal under the Act of Proscription, following the Jacobite defeat at the Battle of Culloden in 1746. Walk to Puilladobhrain Anchorage – this short, scenic walk leaves from Clachan Seil, just to the right of the Tigh an Truish Hotel. This sheltered spot is popular with yachts and boats in the summer months. The Slate Island are a group of islands, consisting of Luing, Seil, Easdale and Balnahua, and located in the Inner Hebrides, just north of Jura. They are known as the islands that roofed the world because, as the name suggests, they were once famous for their slate quarries. Now more than half a century later the island community is looking to start slate quarrying again as there is a growing market for the product. #scotland #visitscotland #scotlandthebrave #foryou #fyp
01:00SLAINS CASTLE 🏴 Among the many castles nestled away in the Aberdeenshire countryside, Slains Castle near Cruden Bay is surely one of the most interesting due to its association with Dracula. You may be familiar with many of the castles in the region, including Dunnottar, Craigievar, Fyvie, and Fraser. What you might not know, however, is that one supposedly inspired Bram Stoker's Dracula. Fans of The Crown on Netflix may also recognise Slains Castle, as it was used as a filming location for the series. In the first season of the Royal drama, the castle stood in for Castle Mey when the Queen Mother visited Scotland. The castle was originally constructed sometime around 1597 by the Earl of Erroll, a hereditary title within the Hay family. The Hays were a powerful and influential family in the area, and owned Slains Castle all the way through to sometime in the 1910s, at which point they sold it to Sir John Ellerman. The present castle was built by Francis Hay, 9th Earl of Errol, after James VI had destroyed his castle at what is now known as Old Slains ,further south down the coast near Collieston, after the Hays had taken part in the rebellion of 1594 along with the Earl of Huntly. Not much more than one crumbling wall with a window or doorway survives from this building. Dr Johnson and Boswell visited the newer Slains in 1773. Bram Stoker had the inspiration for writing Dracula here, after staying in a cottage near Cruden Bay and perhaps visiting the castle, although the building was not a ruin at the time, as some have suggested. The castle is in a dangerous location near cliffs, and great care should be taken, particularly with children. A 15-year-old boy fell to his death here in 2013. Some accounts have the castle haunted by the ghost of Victor Hay, 21st Earl of Errol, who died in the first quarter of the 20th century. #scotland #visitscotland #braveheart #outlander #dracula #bramstoker #foryou
01:00C A S T L E S O F S C O T L A N D 🏴 A castle is a type of fortified structure built primarily during the Middle Ages. People debate the scope of the word "castle", but usually consider it to be the private fortified residence of a lord or noble. This is distinct from a fortress, which was not a home, although this distinction is not absolute and the same structure may have had different uses from time to time. The term has been popularly applied to structures as diverse as hill forts and country houses. Over the approximately 900 years that castles were built, they took on a great many forms. In Scotland, earlier fortifications had included hill forts, brochs, and duns; and many castles were on the site of these earlier buildings. The first castles were built in Scotland in the 11th and 12th centuries, with the introduction of Anglo-Norman influence. These motte and bailey castles were replaced with the first stone-built castles from around 1200. By the late 14th century, the large curtain-walled castles had begun to give way to more modest tower houses – vertical dwellings with less formidable defences. This type of vertical house continued to be popular with Scotland's landowning class through to the late 17th century, when classical architecture made its first appearance in the country. Meanwhile, the advance of artillery pressed military engineers to devise stronger fortifications for important royal strongholds. Tower houses and castles were often given painted ceilings and decorative plasterwork in the 16th and 17th centuries, employing distinctive national styles. In the late 18th century, forms found in medieval Scottish architecture were revived and castle-style houses were constructed. These "castles" had no defensive capability, but drew on military and tower house architecture for their decorative details. This architectural trend culminated in the Scottish Baronial style of the 19th century. There have been well over two thousand castles in Scotland, although many are known only through historical records. #scotland #visitscotland #braveheart #outlander #foryou
01:00C U L Z E A N C A S T L E 🏴 Culzean Castle stands on the brink of 150ft cliffs that drop sheer into the Firth of Clyde. Regarded by many as one of the finest examples of the architect's art in Scotland, both externally and internally. Cared for by the National Trust for Scotland. With gardens, beaches, woods, trails and new adventure playgrounds to explore, and to crown it all, a cliff-top castle of monumental size: there’s no doubt you’ll have a fantastic day out at Culzean. The origins of Culzean Castle (which is pronounced cull-ane) probably date back to the late 1300s with the building here of a stone tower house. This was referred to in the 1400s as the House of Cove or Coif Castle, both thought to be references to the caves in the cliffs below the castle. By the 1600s it was being referred to as Cullean Castle, and the current spelling came into vogue during the 1700s. The story of Culzean is the story of the Kennedy clan, a branch of the Lords of Galloway, who were the most powerful family in the ancient kingdom of Carrick, now absorbed into Ayrshire. The Kennedy's supported Robert the Bruce in the Scottish Wars of Independence and rose to be first Lords, then Earls of Cassillis. * @National Trust for Scotland own the rights to this imagery * #scotland #visitscotland #foryou #outlander #braveheart
